I’m a ceramic artist, based in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand. I make one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces and functional domestic ware, thrown on the wheel or handbuilt. I mainly work with stoneware clay, although sometimes terracotta.
My work explores tension, imbalance, texture and emotion. I first took up pottery when living in Tochigi-ken in Japan teaching English in the late 90s. I’m influenced by the Japanese aesthetic and concept of wabi sabi, finding beauty in imperfection. I also make jewellery and weave (raranga) flax and other fibres.
I hold a Diploma of Fine Arts from Otago Polytechnic School of Art, majoring in sculpture.
I teach pottery, handbuilding and wheel work, and am available for individual or group classes. Please contact me at [email protected] if you'd like to find out more.
